US.14- Grand Slamming Before the Sun Sets on the City

=DAY 14 NOTES=
...Sunday was made for slams. Grand Slams, actually.

Barbora Krejcikova & Katerina Siniakova completed their Career Doubles Slam, staging a comeback from 6-3/4-1 down vs. Caty McNally & Taylor Townsend to take control down the stretch and win the final by a 3-6/7-5/6-1 score. The winners of three majors this season (and sporting a spotless 18-0 record in slams, missing RG because Krejcikova got Covid), they're 21-2 together on all levels in '22 and now have six total major titles.

Actually it's a bit more than that (but I guess we can't expect the U.S. Open to bother to note it... I mean, they were probably busy trying to find something that Serena did on a Tuesday in 2003 to point out that no one had mentioned yet, right?).

Not only do Krejickova & Siniakova join the Williams sisters as the only two female pairs in history to complete a "Career Golden Slam," but they stand *alone* as the only women's team to complete a "Super Slam" (titles at all four slams, the Olympics and the year-end championships).

...in the wheelchair singles final, Diede de Groot did what she does. She won, completing her second consecutive Grand Slam by winning her eighth straight slam crown (and fifth in a row at Flushing Meadows). But it wasn't easy.

Fighting against her serve in the 1st set (as in 7 DF), de Groot dropped the opener to Yui Kamiji in their 14th meeting in a slam singles final. But de Groot finally got things situated in the 2nd, and dropped just two games (6-1/6-1) in the final two sets, though both lasted longer than Kamiji's 6-3 win in the 1st.

De Groot's win moves her ever closer to challenging some of Esther Vergeer's career WC slam numbers, but her *own* are pretty impressive. 31 total slam wins, with 16 in singles and 15 in doubles. Her sweep of both titles at this Open was her 11th such feat in a major in her career, with her doing so in six of the last eight slams.

She's now won 65 straight singles matches (w/ 17 titles in a row) dating back to early last year, when Kamiji defeated her before the '21 Australian Open. De Groot has since defeated her 13 straight times, improving her career mark to 31-15 in their head-to-head, but an even more impressive 29-4 in their last 33 (12-2 in slam finals, w/ 11 straight wins).

With her perfect s/d run this past week, de Groot is a combined 46-1 in '22 and 111-4 the last two seasons.

...in the WTA 125 challenger in Bari, Italy, Austria's Julia Grabher picked up her biggest career title, defeating #433-ranked Italian qualifier Nuria Brancaccio 6-4/6-2. Grabher will crack the Top 100 for the first time on Monday.

Elisabetta Cocciaretto & Olga Danilovic won the doubles.

...in weekend ITF action, Tamara Korpatsch won her 11th career circuit crown in Montreux, Switzerland, taking the $60K title with a victory over Emma Navarro. The #3 seed, Korpatsch defeated top seed Arantxa Rus in the semis.

In Santarem, Portugal, Vitalia Diatchenko's comeback from yet another injury saw her pick up a $25K crown with a win over Isabella Kruger. The Hordette is now 24-6 in pro singles finals (3-0 WTA 125, 21-6 ITF).
